Licences
LaikaSuite is written from nothing: no framework, no build step, no package manager, and no script loaded from anyone else's server. Five pieces of it are somebody else's work, and each of those five asks for something in return. This page is where that is given.
How to read this page
Each entry names the work, its author, the version that ships here, the licence it is used under, and what it does. The full text of every licence is served from this site rather than linked to somebody else's copy of it, because a licence that lives on another server is a licence that can move.
Nothing on this list is loaded at runtime from a third party. Every file named here is served from this domain, which is why using LaikaSuite makes no request to anyone else — the privacy policy explains how your browser enforces that.
Two libraries, for one format
PDF is the only format in the suite that no browser can both read and write on its own. Reading it and writing it are two different problems, which is why there are two libraries here and only here.
- pdf.js 4.10.38
- Mozilla Foundation and contributors — Apache License 2.0. Renders PDF pages to a canvas and extracts their text. It is what the PDF reader draws with, and what the flashcard tray reads a selection through.
- pdf-lib 1.17.1
- Andrew Dillon and contributors — MIT License. Creates and modifies PDF documents. It is what writes annotations back into a file, and what the applications export a PDF through.
Both licences are permissive and both are satisfied here by reproducing their text and preserving their notices. Neither imposes any condition on you as a user of the applications.
Three typefaces
All three are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits self-hosting — the reason browsing this site makes no request to a font service — and asks in return that its text travel with the files and that the authors be named.
- Anton
- The Anton Project Authors — OFL 1.1. The display face, used for headings and wordmarks. It appears in the suite under the name LS Display.
- PT Serif
- ParaType Ltd — OFL 1.1. The reading face, used for body text in the document applications. It appears under the name LS Serif.
- PT Mono
- ParaType Ltd — OFL 1.1. The monospaced face, used for labels, code and figures. It appears under the name LS Mono.
The renaming is worth stating plainly, because it looks like a claim and is not one. The OFL reserves the original name and expressly permits — indeed encourages — a derived or bundled version to carry a different one. Copyright stays with the authors named above; the files themselves are unmodified.
Where the licence texts are
Served from this site, next to the files they cover:
- The Apache License 2.0, for pdf.js: /vendor/pdf.js.LICENSE
- The MIT License, for pdf-lib: /vendor/pdf-lib.LICENSE.md
- The SIL Open Font License 1.1, with the copyright notices of all three typefaces: /packages/design-system/fonts/OFL.txt
This website
The hub — the page that launches the applications — stands on less than the applications do: it needs no PDF library, only the three typefaces above and its own code.
Everything else
The rest is original work: the fourteen applications, the design system, the icons, the illustrations, the wordmarks, the translations into twenty-three languages, and every line of the code that runs them. No framework, no UI library, no icon pack, no stock imagery, no snippet copied from anywhere.
That is a deliberate constraint rather than a boast. It is what makes a list this short possible, and it is what makes it honest: a dependency tree of four hundred packages cannot be audited by the person shipping it, and the licence page of such a project is a guess.
